Royals' reliever Kyle Farnsworth joins Naturals on rehab

Kansas City Royals' right-hander Kyle Farnsworth joined the Naturals Wednesday to continue his minor league rehabilitation assignment as he recovers from a small tear in his right groin.
Farnsworth, a 33-year old resident of Celebration, FL, is in his first season with the Royals and tenth major league season overall. The 6'4", 233 lb. hurler signed a two-year deal to join Kansas City as a set-up option to closer Joakim Soria and made 24 appearances from the Royals bullpen earlier this season, posting a 1-4 record and 4.24 ERA with 25 sterikeouts in 23 1/3 innings.
He began his rehab assignment with the Omaha Royals, the Royals' Triple-A Pacific Coast League affiliate. He made two appearances, most recently on Tuesday evening when he tossed a scoreless inning against the Reno Aces (Arizona Diamondbacks). He last appeared with the Royals on June 24th.
In 639 career appearances at the Major League level, Farnsworth owns a 31-52 record and 27 saves with a 4.46 ERA. He was drafted in the 47th round of the 1994 draft by the Chicago Cubs and has pitched for the Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Atlanta Braves, and New York Yankees.
Up through the 2008 season, Farnsworth was one of the big leagues most durable relievers, having made at least 60 appearances in six consecutive seasons. His 418 relief appearances and 441 strikeouts as a reliever from the 2003-2008 seasons rank as the seventh-most in baseball. Farnsworth split his 2008 season between the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers, joining the Tigers for the second time in his career in a late-July trade for future Hall of Fame catcher Ivan Rodriguez.
Farnsworth will wear jersey # 36 with the Naturals.
