Quad City Steamwheelers News Release
Quad City Quarterback Becomes the Team's First Signal Caller to Win the Award Since Tony Zimmerman in 2002
DAVENPORT, Iowa. - Quad City Steamwheelers quarterback Sam Clemons was today named the af2's Offensive Player of the week following his seven touchdown performance against the Albany Conquest in the âWheelers 62-50 win at OS Field at The MARK of the Quad Cities on Saturday night. Clemons completed 19-of-28 passes for 287 yards and seven scores, including six of 15 yards or longer, to lead Quad City to its highest scoring night of the season and lift it into the sixth playoff position.
Things started brightly for the former Western Illinois star as he hit Jeff Hewitt on the first play from scrimmage with a 17-yard scoring toss to give the âWheelers an early 7-0 advantage. Hewitt would add a second touchdown catch later in the game to make him one of three Steamwheelers with multiple scoring grabs on the evening. Tim Dodge had a five-yard and 28-yard score on either side of halftime while Torey Morris pulled in a 15-yard scoring strike late in the third quarter and then a 16-yard one early in the fourth. Travis Burns caught Clemons' only other touchdown pass, a 28-yarder early in the first quarter that gave the Steamwheelers a 14-6 advantage.
The only negative on the night for Clemons was that he saw his streak of six consecutive games with a rushing touchdown snapped. He ran the ball three times for six yards but it was OS Travis Burns who tallied the Steamwheelers lone running score on the night.
With the award, Clemons becomes the fourth quarterback in Steamwheeler history, joining Billy Dicken, Jay McDonagh and Tony Zimmerman to be so honored, with Zimmerman picking up his award during in Week Five of the 2002 season.
The last Steamwheeler prior to Clemons to win any of the league's weekly awards was DS Matt Forbes who won back-to-back ADT Defensive Player of the Week Awards in Week Two and Week Three of this year. Jeff Hewitt is the last Quad City player to be named the league's Offensive Player of the Week, collecting the honor for his performance against Manchester in Week One of last season.
The Steamwheelers are back in action on Friday, June 24 when they travel to New England to take on the 10-1 Manchester Wolves at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) at the Verizon Wireless Arena in a game that can be heard live on the radio on WFXN 1230 AM and KWPC 860 AM or on the web at www.steamwheelers.com.
