Sockers Sign Lilavois, McDonald
January 8, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
San Diego Sockers News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. Â The San Diego Sockers signed Bernie Lilavois and Chris McDonald on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 for a fifteen-day trial period. The recent injury to forward Mark Ughy opened up an opportunity for both men to join the team.
"I am excited to be playing for the team I used to watch as a little kid," said Lilavois. "I can remember watching Brian Quinn and Ralf Wilhelms play when I would go to games as a young kid. I just want to help and contribute this weekend. Hopefully I can turn this into something permanent."
Lilavois brings over ten years of professional soccer experience to the Sockers. He won a National Championship with the San Francisco Blackhawks in 1991 and was named MVP for the Charleston Battery in 1998. He spent this last year coaching youth soccer in Orange County. During the 2002-2003 season, Lilavois had a brief stint with the Cleveland Force. In three games with the Force he had one assist and a block.
In addition to Lilavois, Chris McDonald joins the Sockers after taking some time away from the game to be with his family in Sacramento. After two seasons away from indoor soccer McDonald is excited to be back.
"The last time I played was in the 2001 semi-finals against Dallas, I am really looking forward to playing again," said McDonald.
The 5-9, 190 pound forward will assist Lilavois in adding depth to the Sockers.
McDonald brings championship experience to San Diego, having won the World Indoor Soccer League Championship in 1999 with the Sacramento Knights.
"He was one of the most impressive players in the WISL over the past few years and the team leader for Sacramento," said Coach Brian Quinn. "He'll give us added firepower going forward." The Sockers will waste no time putting Lilavois and McDonald into the lineup in this weekend's games against the Monterrey Fury and the Milwaukee Wave. San Diego first plays Monterrey on Friday, January 9 at 7 p.m. They also host the Milwaukee on Saturday at 7 p.m.
