North Texas Fresh News Release
FORT WORTH - DALLAS -- Just over a month after being signed and selected to the roster, Roy Giles, Kyle Plath, and T.J. Gibson showed Jay Bowdy (Owner/Head Coach) and the North Texas Fresh why they are well worth the move.
Plath, Giles, and Gibson each scored 18 points and capped a big surge in the fourth quarter that sent the #9 power ranked Fresh past the #7 ranked West Texas Whirlwinds 118-107 Friday night for their first win on the season.
"I thought we played with great composure and as one unit," Fresh owner/coach Jay Bowdy said. "When you combine the aggressiveness on the defensive and the ability to be unselfish offensively with our good scoring guards, I thought we did a excellent job."
A.D. Duncan led the way with 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assist for the Fresh, which was team high in those three categories.
Plath scored with six big 3 - point shots, while Gibson's athleticism and Giles penetration gave the Fresh a big boost on offense. Montrell Williams kept the Whirlwind at bay with 5 steals.
Other big rookie signings, Troy Edwards and Brandon Wesley both contributed 11 points each. Rookie and starting point guard, Chuka Iwegbu, playing despite an injured foot, added 11 points also in 18 minutes of action.
"We need help from everybody," Williams said. "These kind of games are important for the guys that don't play much or are in their first season to get confident and to play our system."
Game notes
The Fresh are 5 - 0 against the Whirlwinds in the history of their rivalry. ... North Texas scored 68 points from their bench, 15 more than West Texas, and outscored the Whirlwinds in the paint 56 to 48.
