Tulsa 66ers News Release
Tulsa, OK - Playing without two of their normal starters, the Tulsa 66ers overwhelmed the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 108-90 Friday at the Tulsa Convention Center. Larry Owens led all-scorers with 27 points, grabbed seven rebounds, had four assists and four steals.
"Our starters tonight really came out and set the tone," 66ers head coach Nate Tibbetts said. "I am really proud of our effort defensively as a team."
Tulsa shot a season-high 60 percent (9-15) from three-point range in the game, as well as 51.8 percent (43-83) overall from the field. The 66ers forced 20 turnovers by the Vipers, leading to 30 points.
Owens scored six of the first 11 points for the 66ers to start the game, as Tulsa shot 11-for-21 from the field in the first quarter. Despite the hot shooting, there were 14 lead changes in the period, but the 66ers took the lead for good off a Latavious Williams put back with 11 seconds remaining, giving them a 26-24 advantage at the break.
Going on a 19-10 run and forcing six turnovers in the first eight minutes of the second quarter, an Owens dunk after a steal gave the 66ers a 45-34 lead with 4:16 remaining. Cecil Brown scored 10 points in the period, as Tulsa took a 55-46 edge heading into halftime.
A 22-2 run to start the second half blew the game wide open, after a Brown three-pointer gave the 66ers a 77-48 lead with 6:15 remaining in the third quarter. Brown scored 10 points in the third quarter, as Tulsa shot 14-of-22 and outrebounded the Vipers 18-8 in the quarter.
