Tulsa, Okla., December 13, 2009 - Despite game-highs of 21 points and seven assists from guard Mustafa Shakur, the Tulsa 66ers two-game road winning streak was snapped by the Maine Red Claws 87-82 on Sunday at the Portland Expo Building.
The 66ers were aggressive on both ends of the floor to start the game, forcing seven first quarter turnovers by the Red Claws, and out shooting Maine from the free throw line, going 7-for-10 compared to 4-for-4. Tulsa took a 26 to 16 lead heading into the second period.
Tulsa went on a 15-6 run to start the second quarter, capped by a Larry Owens three-point play to put the 66ers ahead 41-22 with 7:35 remaining in the half. Tulsa shot 61 percent (11-18) in the period, behind 11 second quarter points from Cecil Brown, which gave them a 57-40 lead heading into halftime.
A Trey Gilder dunk sparked a 10-0 run in the third quarter, pulling the Red Claws to within 54-62. Another 8-0 run by the Red Claws in the final 2:40, along with 57 percent shooting in the period, pulled Maine to with 66-69 heading into the final quarter.
Maine took the lead with 2:13 remaining in the game at 84-82 after an Anthony Terrell tip-in. Tulsa shot 27 percent (10-37) and were outscored 48-25, in the second half.
The Red Claws (5-1) finished with four players in double-figure scoring. Will Blalock finished with 15 points, while Darnell Lazare added 14 points and eight rebounds. Alexis Ajinca added 12 points, while Billy Thomas Contributed 10 points.
Led by Shakur, the 66ers (4-5) finished with four players in double-figures. Oklahoma City Thunder assignee Byron Mullens put up 19 points and grabbed six boards, while Brown added 16 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Owens contributed 16 points and nine boards.
The 66ers return home for a back-to-back series against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers next Friday and Saturday, Dec. 18 and 19. Friday will feature a double-header as Booker T. Washington will face East Central high school in a boy's varsity match up prior to the 66ers game. Fans are asked to bring two non-perishable food items to Friday's game and gently used coats for kids to Saturday's game and receive vouchers for 66ers tickets and more.
