Inland Empire 66ers News Release
LANCASTER, Calif. - The 66ers scored four runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game before the JetHawks scored a run in the bottom half for a 7-6 win Sunday. With the loss, the 66ers are eliminated from playoff contention.
After having just four hits off Lancaster starter Shane Wolf in the first eight innings, the 66ers broke through in the ninth. Down 6-2, Andres Perez, Jaime Ortiz and Preston Mattingly each singled. Christian Lara followed with a double and Alex Garabedian reached on an infield single as the Sixers pulled within a run. Pinch hitter Garett Green then produced a game-tying sacrifice fly to center.
Wolf was finally removed from the game and relieved by Jose Duran. A bunt single by Jovanny Rosario put runners at the corners with one out, but Elian Herrera and Steve Caseres struck out, stranding the runners with the game tied at six.
Eric Krebs (0-2) remained in the game for the 66ers after pitching the eighth and yielded a one-out double to Jon Gaston. After a pair of walks, Marcos Cabral sent a fly ball over a drawn-in outfield, scoring Gaston with the winning run.
The comeback seemed improbable after Wolf rolled through the 66ers lineup for the first eight frames, setting a career-high with ten strikeouts. The Sixers didn't have a hit until Andres Perez hit a two-run homer to right in the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Jon Gaston gave the JetHawks a lead in the first off Tim Sexton, crushing a solo home run to right, his minor-league leading 35th of the season.
Matt Weston hit a wind-blown homer in the second for a 2-0 lead. Five consecutive JetHawks reached base in the third and three scored as Lancaster pulled in front, 5-0.
Sexton allowed 5 runs on 6 hits in 4 innings. The right-hander walked 2 and struck out 3.
Wolf, despite fanning 10, was charged with 6 runs (5 earned) on 9 hits in 8 1/3 innings after the costly ninth inning. Duran (2-5) picked up the win for stranding the runners at the corners.
Perez went 3-for-4 while Rosario and Mattingly each added two hits for the 66ers
The 66ers (59-80) and JetHawks (55-84) finish the 2009 season with the series finale Monday at 6 p.m. RHP Justin Miller (0-6, 7.42) takes the hill for the 66ers while the JetHawks give the nod to RHP Leandro Cespedes (8-10, 5.01). Radio coverage on KCAA 1050AM begins at 5:55 p.m.
