Tulsa 66ers News Release
TULSA, Okla., March 9, 2007 - The Tulsa 66ers of the NBA Development League were able to control the tempo in tonight's match-up against the Austin Toros to win their second consecutive game on home hardwood at Expo Square Pavilion 125-93. The victory over Austin tonight moves the 66ers percentage points ahead of the Toros and into fourth place in the Eastern Division.
The 66ers outscored Austin in all quarters and went on to score 42 points in the third quarter to put the game away. Tulsa slightly outrebounded the Toros 38-37 and capitalized on Austin's 27 turnovers, compared to Tulsa's 13 turnovers.
"We did a good job executing our offense and defense tonight. Our two NBA assignments, Markota and Vinicius really showed why they're NBA players tonight," said Tulsa 66ers Head Coach Joey Meyer.
Tulsa was led by guard Denham Brown who had 21 points on 10-17 shooting. Guards Will Conroy and Desmon Farmer chipped in for 19 and 18 points, respectively. Conroy also grabbed the only double-double on the night adding 14 assists. Damir Markota, assigned by the Milwaukee Bucks, also added 18 points to the 66ers win, while Marcus Vinicius, on assignment from the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets, poured in 14 points of his own. Coming off the bench, Alan Anderson also scored in double-figures with 16 points.
"I thought that we played well. The chemistry that we had tonight was great. The only thing that we can do is get better and if we get better than this, I like our chances," said Conroy about Tulsa's playoff race.
Austin guard BJ Elder led the Toros in scoring with 19 points. Five other Toros also scored in double-figures including Justin Bowen with 13, Troy Bell for 12, Jamar Smith chipped in 11, and Kris Clack and former 66er guard Cheyne Gadson each had 10.
This was the third regular season meeting between the two teams, with the series tied 2-2. The game against Austin scheduled for February 24 was postponed due to the sudden death of Toros head coach Dennis Johnson. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 10 in Austin.
Tomorrow night, the 66ers take on the Arkansas RimRockers, the Eastern Division's last-place team. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Expo Square Pavilion. Doors open at 6 p.m. The first 1,066 fans receive a NO/OKC Hornets affiliate t-shirt. Fans will enjoy performances by the Hornets Honeybee Dance Team and an appearance by the Hornets official mascot, Hugo.
