Las Vegas Aviators News Release
The Las Vegas 51s (13-12) came out with their hitting-shoes on and plated 10 runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Albuquerque Isotopes (14-10) 18-5 Tuesday night at Isotopes Park. A three-run homer by Isotopes' third baseman Dallas McPherson was one of the few bright spots for the âTopes, who surrendered 21 hits on the night.
Las Vegas started its hitting rampage in the first when Luis Maza singled to left-center field, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and was driven in by a Terry Tiffee single. Tiffee then advanced on a fielding error and scored on a wild pitch from starting pitcher Dallas Trahern to give the 51s a 2-0 lead.
The Isotopes started a comeback in the second, tying up the score when Paul Hoover lined a single past the shortstop and continued to third on Alexis Gomez's double. Las Vegas starter Justin Orenduff then uncorked a wild pitch of his own, allowing Hoover to cross home and put Albuquerque on the board 2-1. Chase Lambin added an RBI double, scoring Gomez and knotting the game at two apiece.
The 51s regained their lead in the third when Xavier Paul led off with a home run to center field to put Vegas up 3-2. With two outs, Kevin Howard doubled to left field before A.J. Ellis was hit by a pitch, putting a pair of runners on for John-Ford Griffin, who laced a double to drive in both Howard and Ellis, taking the score back up to 5-2 51s.
Albuquerque didn't let the 51s enjoy their three-run lead for long. Andrew Beattie singled to right and went to second after John Gall walked. Then McPherson came out with a long three-run homer tying the game again at 5-5. The blast was McPherson's PCL-leading ninth on the year.
Las Vegas's Paul struck again in the fifth, however, with his second home run of the game to give 51s back the lead at 6-5.
The 51s came up with two more runs in the seventh, when Maza singled up the middle and scored of Paul's double. Then, with two outs, pinch-hitter Wilkin Raun hammered a triple to center field and immediately scored on a Howard single to center, upping the score 8-5. Paul finished with five hits and five RBI on the night to lead Las Vegas.
Las Vegas finished off the âTopes in furious fashion off of Scott Nestor and Joe Nelson in the ninth. The 51s led off with six consecutive singles and by the time the dust had settled, they had scored 10 runs on nine hits that iced the 18-5 victory. The 10 runs in the ninth set a record for most runs allowed by the Isotopes in a single inning.
The Isotopes will look to get back in the win column tomorrow for the third game their set against the Las Vegas 51s, Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Starting for the Isotopes will be right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (2-1, 10.13), who will face off against 51's right-hander Miguel Pinango (1-0, 4.08).
