G-Braves Blanked by Faria, Bulls Gwinnett held to two hits in 6-0 loss at Durham
DURHAM, NC - Jacob Faria and three relievers combined on a two-hit shutout, leading the Durham Bulls (27-14) to a 6-0 win over the Gwinnett Braves (21-20) on Saturday night at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
With the shutout loss, Gwinnett's third of the season, the G-Braves' losing streak has reached a season-high four games.
Faria (W, 5-1) had a no-hitter going through 5.2 innings, when Sean Kazmar Jr. broke it up with a double to the wall in left. Faria worked past the hit, striking out Mel Rojas Jr. to end the sixth inning. He then fanned Lane Adams to start the seventh before exiting to a standing ovation.
Adam Kolarek worked the rest of the seventh, and Jeff Ames and Ryan Garton each added scoreless innings for Durham.
The Bulls scored five of their six runs in a five-hit first inning against Matt Wisler. Former G-Brave Mallex Smith led off the game with a bunt single, took second on a throwing error by Wisler, stole third and scored on an RBI triple by Willy Adames. Later in the inning, Curt Casali stroked a two-run single and Johnny Field added a sacrifice fly to make it 5-0.
Jake Bauers ripped a solo home run to center field off Wisler in the fifth, raising the lead to 6-0.
Wisler (L, 1-3) yielded six earned runs on 12 hits over 5.1 innings, walked none and struck out six. Caleb Dirks pitched 1.2 scoreless, one-hit innings and Mauricio Cabrera pitched 1.0 scoreless, hitless inning.
Aside from Kazmar Jr.'s double, the only other G-Braves' hit on the night came from Carlos Franco. He legged out an infield single against Kolarek for his first career Triple-A hit in the seventh inning.
For Durham, Casali finished 2-for-4 with a game-high two RBIs. Adames went 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI, and Bauers went 1-for-3 with a homer and an RBI.
The G-Braves and Bulls wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at Durham Bulls Athletic Park, first pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. Right-hander Aaron Blair (1-2, 4.35 ERA) is scheduled to start for Gwinnett, while Durham will counter with right-hander Brent Honeywell (2-4, 3.86 ERA). Dave Lezotte has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM The Other Side of the River beginning at 6:05 p.m.
