Soo Greyhounds News Release

Nearly forty-eight hours since the final buzzer sounded at the 2013 U16 OHL Gold Cup, and the excitement still exudes from Hounds draftee ZACH SENYSHYN (3rd Rd, 2013), and rightfully so.

Suiting up for Team ODHA (Ottawa District Hockey Association), Senyshyn and his teammates tallied six times in the final over Team GTHL to take the Gold Medal game by a score of 6-2.

"Being in the Gold Medal game was a very exciting experience. We had beat GTHL Royal Blue in the round robin and knew that they were a very talented team and would come out fighting. To be able to contribute to the win by scoring a goal is a memory that I will cherish for a long time. Our team was very special, we bonded from the beginning partly because many of us were already teammates or friends from spring hockey and the coaches did a great job bringing us and our different skills sets together" said Senyshyn about the winning performance.

And while the win was obviously special to Senyshyn and his teammates, he was equally proud of what he felt it does for their area, and the players within their Association.

"Winning the Gold Cup was very special to the people here in Ottawa because a lot of the Ottawa players get passed over because of the lack of exposure we get. We were able to compete and win with no 1st round draft picks and with some of our players not being drafted at all. This tournament gave us the opportunity to show everyone what a great league we have here in Ottawa" said Zach.

Sunday's victory capped off a span of five games for the Ottawa, ON product against the top talent in his age category.

"It was such a privilege to be able to play against the top players in Ontario. The competition was amazing and it was great to be able to measure ourselves and our team against the best in the province. I have played against many of the players during the season in tournaments but to see so many of them playing together on the same team was incredible and fun to watch" explained Senyshyn.

The 6'1", 176-lb right winger would end the weekend with 3 goals and 2 assists (good for 4th on Team ODHA). He chipped in with a goal in the championship game while tallied multi-point games versus Team HNO and Team OMHA respectively.

"This experience has given me a lot of confidence in taking the jump to the next level and showed me that I was able to compete and show well with the top players in the province. The thing I took away from the U16 Gold Cup was the overall experience of having fun playing hockey. That regardless of what level you play at, its just a game and we play it because we love it" explained Senyshyn when asked the confidence he may have gained from it, and the most important thing he took from the event.

An event that all-in-all was an unbelievable experience.

"To be able play four days of hockey with the best teammates you could ask for and win the cup was truly an unbelievable experience. I wish I would have been able to capitalize on more of my opportunities but I hope I showed the Team Ontario staff what I have to offer" said Zach, who hopes to have the chance at the once-in-a lifetime opportunity.

And now with the U16 OHL Gold Cup in the rearview mirror, Senyshyn still remains set for busy months ahead.

"I am just focusing on training this summer to get bigger, faster, and stronger. I am just trying to keep on playing the game that I love at the highest level possible" he concluded.

A level that will be attainable with performances, results and hard work like that shown at the U16 OHL Gold Cup this past weekend.

Re: The Hounds Development Camp Experience earlier this month

" The Soo Development Camp was the most amazing hockey experience of my life - the facilities, staff, and the professionalism was something I have never been a part of before. I learned a lot from the Coaches and everyone there made me feel at home and welcome. The game on Saturday night at the Essar Centre was something I will definitely never forget. Being drafted by the Greyhounds was an honour and I take great pride in and I consider myself lucky to be drafted by such a terrific organization."
