ROCKVILLE, MD. Rockville, MD.For the third time this season, the Lawton-Fort Sill Calvary defeated the Maryland GreenHawks 105-99.
Lawton started the game off fast taking a 24-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The GreenHawks began the second quarter on a 23-4 run, including 11 points by newly-signed Derick Payne, taking a 40-28 lead.
The Cavalry fought back, finishing the half on a 15-3 run capped off by a Shawn Daniels buzzer-beating three to cut the deficit to 46-43 going into halftime.
Lawton outscored the GreenHawks 30-17 in the third quarter, building a 89-75 lead with 6:58 remaining in the game.
Maryland would not go down without a fight, as the GreenHawks went on a 22-8 run over the next 5:20 with Byron Mouton hitting a three-pointer in the corner to tie the game at 97 with 1:38 left to go.
Lawton's Shawn Daniels (37 points and 10 rebounds) responded by connecting on a flip shot in the lane and after a missed three by Scooter Sherrill, Daniels hit a lay-in to make the score 101-97 with 38 seconds left.
After a GreenHawks turnover, Tim Ellis (14 points) scored a breakaway dunk to extend the Lawton lead to 103-97. Two free throws by Scooter Sherrill made the score 103-99, but DeAnthony Bowden (14 points, six rebounds and six assists) hit two-of-four free throws in the final seconds as the Cavalry picked up a 105-99 win.
Newly signed Derick Payne led the GreenHawks with 24 points and seven rebounds. Scooter Sherrill added 22 points and Derrick Mercer had a game-high 12 assists off the bench.
Lawton will play host the Puerto Rico Capitanes tomorrow night and the GreenHawks will host the defending PBL Champion Rochester RazorSharks next Saturday night at 7PM.
