
3 CyberRays called up for USA-Nigeria match

SAN JOSE (April 9, 2003) â Three CyberRays â goalkeeper LaKeysia Beene and defenders Thori Bryan and Brandi Chastain â have been called up by U.S. national team coach April Heinrichs to train for the Saturday, April 26 World Cup warm-up match against Nigeria in RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
They are among 24 players, 21 from WUSA teams, called up for the four-day training camp. Eighteen will be selected to the U.S. roster for the match against Nigeria, which will be played as the first game of a doubleheader with the WUSA's Washington Freedom and Atlanta Beat. ESPN will telecast the USA-Nigeria match live at 9 a.m. PDT.
CyberRays coach Ian Sawyers said it is uncertain at this point whether the CyberRays will be without Beene, Bryan and Chastain when the CyberRays play the San Diego Spirit at 5 p.m. PDT Sunday, April 27 in San Diego. Four San Diego players are on the 24-player U.S. roster: defender Joy Fawcett, midfielder Julie Foudy, forward Shannon MacMillan and midfielder Aly Wagner.
The World Cup begins Sept. 23, after the conclusion of the WUSA season, in China.
The CyberRays' next match is 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19 at Spartan Stadium against the Washington Freedom. It is the first game of a doubleheader that also features the MLS San Jose Earthquakes against the Kansas City Wizards.
