San Diego Spirit News Release
SAN DIEGO - San Diego Spirit captain Julie Foudy, defender Joy Fawcett, forward Shannon MacMillan and midfielder Aly Wagner were named to the U.S. Women's National Team roster that will train for four days prior to their upcoming match against Nigeria on Saturday, April 26, in Washington, D.C. The match at RFK Stadium will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. PT and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
U.S. Women's National Team head coach April Heinrichs today named 24 players that will train for four days in Washington, D.C., before choosing a roster of 18 players to face Nigeria in the USA's third domestic game of 2003. A total of 21 WUSA players were called into the training camp.
Foudy has made 225 national team appearances, Fawcett stands at 211, MacMillan has played in 152 games, and Wagner has appeared 41 times. The four players are scheduled to return to San Diego and be available for the club's April 27 game against the San Jose CyberRays at Torero Stadium.
The match serves as important Women's World Cup preparation for the U.S. women, who have drawn an African team - Nigeria - in first round play for the last two world championship events, the 1999 Women's World Cup and the 2000 Olympics. The Super Falcons have participated in all three Women's World Cup tournaments and the 2000 Olympics, and in 1999, became the first African team to advance out of the first round in a women's world championship event. Nigeria defeated Ghana, 2-0, in the African Women's Championship last December after earning its berth to China with a 5-0 win over South Africa in the semifinal.
The game will be followed by a WUSA contest featuring the hometown Washington Freedom against the Atlanta Beat that will kick off at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The San Diego Spirit is a charter member of the WUSA and plays their home matches at the 7,035-seat Torero Stadium on the campus of the University of San Diego.
