Richmond Kickers News Release
Richmond, VA - (Tuesday, January 23, 2007) - Looking to reclaim the James River Cup title, the Richmond Kickers will compete in the 10th edition of the cross-state derby with a home and away, aggregate-score series versus the Virginia Beach Mariners (USL1) beginning away at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on Saturday, March 31st, one week prior to the Kickers home leg on Saturday, April 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium.
At stake is the 2007 James River Cup, a competition and local tradition between Richmond and Virginia Beach based on total points at the end of all matches played between the two teams. With three points awarded for a win and one point awarded for a tie, the winner of the James River Cup will be decided following the conclusion of the home and away matches versus the Mariners to open the 2007 season. Should the series end in a tie, the cup will remain with the current holder. Beginning in 1996, the James River Cup competition has been in existence for eleven seasons as a local derby between the two clubs (the Mariners did not field a team in 1997 or 2001). The Kickers held the James River Cup consistently for seven seasons (1998-2000, 2002-2005) before the Mariners were able to capture the title prior to the 2006 campaign.
"We are pleased to continue this great growing tradition of our local derby and look forward to the challenge of reclaiming the cup," comments Richmond Kickers Vice President & General Manager Paul Sterbenz. "The intensity of this rivalry has continued to flourish for our fans and players alike, it has become one of the most anticipated matches on our season schedule and is a tremendous competition to open the 2007 professional soccer season."
This year's James River Cup matches versus the Kickers cross-state rivals will be considered a cup competition and will not double in the USL standings as in years past, due to the Kickers alignment with the USL Second Division. The USL professional league is a two-tiered system modeled after many of the historic professional leagues around the world and is comprised of the USL First Division and USL Second Division. The USL Second Division serves as the base of the professional structure and the regional focus allows professional soccer to thrive in smaller markets, while providing a premium brand of soccer and an exciting level of competition.
