2007 B-Mets Have Plenty Of Talent And Experience
April 3, 2007 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Seven top prospects and 18 players with Double-A experience are part of the 2007 Binghamton Mets Opening Day roster released today by the New York Mets.
Seven of the 26 players starting the 2007 season in the Southern Tier are listed among the top 30 prospects in the Mets organization as determined by Baseball America. Three of those players are in the top 10, led by #2 Fernando Martinez, an outfielder who hit .279 in 2006, his first pro season. Martinez, 18, is slated to become the first teenager to play for the B-Mets since 19-year-old Jose Reyes in 2002.
Other highly-touted prospects include righthander Kevin Mulvey (#6), who posted a 1.35 ERA in three B-Mets starts last season, less than two months after being drafted in the second round. First baseman Mike Carp (#8) slugged 17 homers for High-A St. Lucie in 2006 while leading Mets farmhands with 88 RBI.
Of the 18 on the roster who have played at the Double-A level, 12 of them saw action with the B-Mets last season, including Owego native Ryan Cullen, a lefty who held opposing hitters to a .212 average in 35 relief appearances last season and infielder Brett Harper, who was hitting .338 before a shoulder injury sidelined him for the year.
Three players come to Binghamton with Major League experience. Righthanded reliever Marcos Carvajal spent all of 2005 with Colorado. Catcher Jose Reyes (no relation to the former B-Mets shortstop of the same name) was a September call-up with the Cubs last season. Infielder Mark Kiger made history last year by becoming the first player to make his Major League debut during the postseason, appearing in two ALCS games with Oakland.
The B-Mets will hold two preseason workouts at NYSEG Stadium - today starting at 1 p.m. and Wednesday at 11 a.m. - before departing for Akron to start the season. Binghamton opens the 2007 campaign against the Aeros on Thursday at 7:05 p.m., the start of a seven-game road trip that will also take them to Erie. The B-Mets play their home opener on Thursday, April 12th against the Portland Sea Dogs, with the first pitch slated for 6:35 p.m.
