Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

(Bossier City, LA) March 17, 2006......Louisiana's "other" professional football team began its sixth season Sunday as players reported for training camp. The Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings of arena football two (af2) began the 2006 season at 6:00 Sunday evening at Independence Stadium in Shreveport as 35 roster players reported for orientation prior to training camp. New Orleans native and former Saints quarterback John Fourcade took over as BattleWings' head coach in September. Fourcade's football history includes stints playing arena football after retiring from the NFL, and then coaching the Florida Firecats of af2 to the league championship game before losing to Peoria several years ago. Says Fourcade, "Arena football is the most exciting brand of football there is. It's fan friendly, fast, and indoors out of the heat and humidity. I am excited to bring a group of experienced arena players to Shreveport-Bossier to get prepared for the BattleWings' season opener April 8th at CenturyTel Center in Bossier City against Central Valley from Fresno, California."

The BattleWings open their season with two games at home: the first against Central Valley on April 8th, the second hosting division rival Arkansas one week later at CenturyTel Center. The Wings close the '06 regular season with two on the road. In between their season looks picture perfect with home and road games alternating every week. That should help the BattleWings who in the past have struggled with brutal long road treks in between home games. "There is a distinct advantage in our league to play in front of the home crowd," Fourcade said. "The fact that fans are right on top of the game as it's played and get so into it makes the players dependent on home fans for energy. Our schedule this season gives us a distinct advantage."

The Wings reside in one of the toughest divisions of the 23-team af2, squaring off twice each against Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Arkansas, Amarillo, and Rio Grande Valley. The Wings only have one killer road trip in the regular season. That comes June 24th against Stockon in Stockton, California.
