Modesto Nuts News Release
Two Modesto Nuts in All-Star Game The Modesto Nuts are currently enjoying a brief, four-day break for the Carolina League-California League All-Star game in Myrtle Beach. Two Modesto Nuts pitchers, starter Aneury Rodriguez and closer Andrew Johnston, are representing the Nuts in the game. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, June 24th at 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com
Rodriguez entered the break with a 6-6 record and a 3.02 ERA. He leads the California League with two complete game Rodriguez.jpgshutouts. Closer Andrew Johnston has been nearly perfect in the first half. The right-hander is 3-0 with 14 saves and a 0.67 ERA. This is Johnston's second consecutive appearance on the California League All-Star team.
Nuts.jpg1st Half Review The Modesto Nuts completed the first half with a record of 34-36, tied for fourth place with the Visalia Oaks. The Nuts offense has struggled in 2008. As a team, the Nuts are batting .256 with only 31 home runs. The Nuts have the fewest runs scored, home runs and RBI in the California League while also leading the league in strikeouts. The pitching, on the other hand, has been excellent at the Nuts staff has the second best ERA in the league (3.85). The Nuts lead the circuit in complete games and are second in the league in shutouts with eight.
The Nuts have been hampered by injuries in the first half. Top prospect Hector Gomez fouled a ball off of his shin in the first game of the season and was recently told he would not play again this year. Outfielder Cole Garner, who was hitting .329, has been sidelined for several weeks with a wrist injury.
Despite the first-half struggles, the Nuts have started the second half strong, winning 4 of the first 6 games. Modesto Nuts fans will remember a similar scenario last year. After finishing the first half in 2007 with a 34-36, the Modesto Nuts were the top team in the league in the 2nd half and made the California League playoffs. Manager Jerry Weinstein and the Nuts are hoping for déjà vu in 2008.
