Colorado 14ers News Release
DENVER - January 27, 2009 - In a game that featured 10 ties and 14 lead changes, the Colorado 14ers outlasted the Erie Bayhawks 114-110 at the Broomfield Event Center Tuesday night. Colorado has now won four of five to improve to 14-7, while Erie's seventh straight loss sends the Bayhawks to 11-15 on the season.
Rookie Trey Gilder led the way for the 14ers with a new career-high 33 points on 10-17 shooting. Eddie Gill added 24 with nine assists, and Dominique Coleman and Jamar Brown both posted double-doubles in the win.
"I think we really toughed it out," said 14ers head coach Bob MacKinnon. "We made plays when we had to make plays, and it shows the character that we have on this team."
Gill found Coleman in the right corner for a 3-pointer with 1:18 to play giving Colorado a 108-107 lead. Erik Daniels misfired on a pair of 3-point attempts in the final 21 seconds, and Gill iced the game at the free throw by knocking down both attempts with just 2.3 seconds remaining.
Colorado rallied to win despite playing without starters Billy Thomas and Josh Davis. Thomas missed the game attending a family funeral in Louisiana, while Davis sat out with a bruised right knee. The 14ers suited up only eight players, with Vernon Hamilton and Damien Lolar having just been added to the roster this morning.
Erie was led by Erik Daniels 33 point effort off the bench in the loss. Maureece Rice added 19, and Oliver Lafayette 18 in the losing effort.
Erie's road trip continues tomorrow night with a visit to the Idaho Stampede in Boise. The 14ers will travel to Rio Grande Valley for a pair of games with the Vipers this weekend.
