Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Bears equaled their season high with 14 base hits en-route to a 9-5 victory over the Lancaster Barnstormers Friday night at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in the opener of a three-game weekend series.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Newark strung together four consecutive hits and scored three runs to take the lead for good, 7-5. The rally started with Jack Santora's bunt single on a 3-2 pitch. Jerson Perez followed with a single to left field; and Francisco Santos put the Bears on top with a ringing two-run double off of the wall in right field. Jose Herrera followed with an RBI triple down the line in right to score Santos.

Wil Quintana provided more breathing room in the 8th inning by smacking a two-run home run to right field, his third of the season and third in the last four games.

Santos, who made a sensational diving catch at first base to record the final out of the game, had two hits and three RBI for Newark. Nick Steppe was 2-4 with his first home run of the season and one RBI; and Perez had three hits and two runs scored. Herrera had two hits and an acrobatic diving catch in left field defensively in the first inning.

Despite allowing two runs in his first appearance of the season, Reggie Harris earned the win in relief for the Bears. Jake Brooks recorded the final four outs for his 6th save of the season.

Lancaster's Quincy Foster was 4-5 with a double, his 2nd home run of the season, a stolen base and 3 runs-batted-in. Teammate Norm Hutchins hit his first two home runs of the season, solo blasts in the 3rd and 7th innings.

These two teams hook up again Saturday night at 6:05 PM with Newark's Joe Gannon (3-2) pitching on two days rest against Lancaster's Scott Patterson (2-1).
