Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks got offensive contributions from 12 different players, propelling the Jacks to a 5-3 win over the Dubuque Fighting Saints at LC Walker Arena on Saturday.
Keegan Karki was among those 12 players to score a point, and also made 24 saves to improve to 17-12-0 on the season.
Monte Graham was the lone Lumberjack to notch multiple points, grabbing two assists.
With the win, Muskegon earns a split of the weekend pair, and splits the season series with Dubuque two games apiece. The Jacks remain three points behind the Saints, who are ties with the Youngstown Phantoms for second place in the East.
For the second-straight night, Dubuque led off the scoring, getting two first-period goals in the frame's final 3:16.
But for the second-straight night, Muskegon had an answer. Matej Pekar and Emilio Pettersen notched their tenth goals of the season in period two to pull the Jacks even with 12:15 to go in the second.
With 8:02 to play in the same period, Muskegon grabbed their first lead of the weekend when Wyatt Bongiovanni forced a neutral zone turnover while shorthanded, carried the puck in offensively, drove the net and got a shot on goalie Cole Weaver. The initial shot didn't make it through, but Jachym Kondelik followed up with a shot off the rebound, just sneaking it past Weaver and barely over the goal line to give Muskegon the 3-2 lead.
Dubuque would tie it 36 seconds into the third when Chayse Primeau scored his second of the night.
From there, it was all Muskegon. Bobby Kaiser broke the 3-3 tie with his seventh of the season, and it would be enough for the Jacks. Marc Del Gaizo added a full-ice empty netter to seal the Muskegon victory 5-3.
The two-goal win is the first time either team has won by more than a goal since the 2015-16 season. Each of the last seven had been one-goal games, and the series has been split down the middle in each of the last two seasons.
Muskegon won't have much time to rest- they hit the road to take on 1st-place Team USA Sunday afternoon at 2:05pm. The game will be aired live on 92.5 Nash Icon and HockeyTV.com.
Muskegon goals: Pekar (10), Pettersen (10), Kondelik (9), Kaiser (7), M. Del Gaizo (8)
Muskegon assists: Anthony Del Gaizo (21), Mikael Hakkarainen (20), Graham (13,14), Alex Yakovenko (5), Bongiovanni (14), Jagger Joshua (3), Karki (2)
