11th inning rally sends Dogs home happy

Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, TX - After the Dogs beat the Colts at Foster Field on June 21, they had to absorb 10 straight defeats before notching another victory in San Angelo. They erased those memories on Monday evening by winning at Foster Field for the second straight night, this time in 11 innings, 7-3.

Chris Caves entered the game as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the 10th and came to the plate to lead off the top of the 11th. Caves, who had been stuck in a 1-for-32 slide, responded in his first at-bat of the game by rifling a single into left-center field. And after Eddie Browne bunted Caves to third, the roof caved in on Colts' lefty Michael Hacker. With a runner on second and one out, Jason Martin connected with a soft grounder back to the mound, Hacker picked it up and threw in the dirt to third, allowing Caves to score and Martin to reach second. Now leading 4-3, Abilene went on to score three more 11th inning runs on the strength of R.B.I.s from Danny Gonzalez, Wilson Batista, and Joe Weik to take a 7-3 lead to the bottom of the 11th.

After Billy Petrick spun seven innings and allowed just a single run on seven hits, the Dogs handed a 3-1 lead to Scott Vander Weg in the bottom of the eighth. The 29-year-old righty walked the first two men he faced before retiring the next pair. That sent Jamar Walton to the plate with the tying runs in scoring position and two outs. Walton, who ended up 4-for-4, smashed a two-strike pitch in the left-center field gap for a game-tying double. Monday marked Walton's second four-hit game of the year.

The Dogs built two separate two-run leads on Monday night. In the fifth, Eddie Browne broke a scoreless tie with an R.B.I. groundout. One inning later, Joe Weik cracked a run -scoring double over J.J. Sherrill's head in center to make it a 2-0 game - Weik went 3-for-5 with a single, a double, a triple and a pair of runs driven in.

After Danny Hernandez produced a sacrifice fly in the seventh off Petrick, Batista widened the gap back to two with a solo homer to left, his ninth of the season - Batista turned in a 3-for-6 night, scoring three times and knocking in three as well.

Logan Williamson started for the Colts and fired eight innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits and compiling 10 strikeouts in a no decision.

The Dogs will enjoy an off day on Tuesday.

It is the sixth time the Abilene has won consecutive games this season. They will search for their first three game win streak of the season when they host the Roadrunners on Wednesday.
