Yard Goats Drop Weekend Opener in Binghamton 7-6

Trenton, NJ- The Hartford Yard Goats (62-48) were defeated by the Binghamton Mets (52-59) by the score of 7-6 on Friday evening in the first of a three game weekend series at NY SEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York. The Yard Goats had leads of 3-1 and 6-3 before the B-Mets battled back to claim the series opener. Harford starter Carlos Hernadez turned in a quality start and allowed just three runs in six innings and left with a 6-3 lead. OF Rosell Herrera had three hits, including an RBI double and scored a run.

The B-Mets scored the first run in the first inning off Hartford starter Carlos Hernandez. After retiring the first two batters, Amed Rosario reached first base on a wild pitch after striking out. He then scored on Domenic Smith's double to left field, giving the Binghamton a 1-0 lead.

The Yard Goats took a 3-1 lead with three runs in the third inning off B-Mets starter Ricky Knapp. Raimel Tapia led off the frame with a triple down the right field line, his Eastern League leading 136th hit. Pat Valaika followed with a double, his EL leading 33rd of the season, scoring Tapia and tying the game at 1-1. Rosell Herrera kept the rally alive with a double to right field scoring Valaika and giving the Yard Goats a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Ashely Graeter came up with a two out single, scoring Herrera and putting Hartford in front 3-1.

The B-Mets tied the game in the fifth inning on Philip Evans two-run home run. The Binghamton second baseman blasted a home run down the left field line, his fifth homer of the season, scoring Markis De La Crus and tying the game at 3-3.

The Yard Goats took a 6-3 lead with another 3-run inning as Hartford worked more magic in the fifth. Ryan McMahon and Ashley Graeter began the rally with back to back singles. Michael Benjamin then dropped a sacrifice bunt which was handed by the pitcher but Knapp's throw to first base sailed about the first baseman's head allowing McMahon to score and give Hartford a 4-3 lead. Correlle Prime then roped a 2 RBI pinch hit single into centerfield, scoring Graeter and Benjamin and giving the Yard Goats a 6-3 lead.

The B-Mets got a run back on Domenic Smith's RBI single in the seventh inning off reliever Konner Wade to make it 6-4. Then Binghamton tied the game in the eighth inning as Stefan Sabol cranked a 2-run homer off Rayan Gonzalez.

Binghamton broke the 6-6 tie on Matt Oberste's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning, scoring Amed Rosario and giving the B-Mets a 7-6 lead.

The Yard Goats continue a three game series against the Binghamton Mets at NYSEG Stadium in Binghamton, New York on Saturday night (5:05 PM). RHP Alex Balog will start for the Yard Goats. The game will be broadcast live on News Radio 1410 WPOP.
