Mohegan Wolves News Release

NEW LONDON, Conn. (August 12, 2003) – Mohegan Wolves lineman Charlie Cook has capped off a stellar season by being named to the American Conference ALL-af2 First Team, it was announced today by the League office. Cook, a second-year player from C.W. Post, is the first player in Wolves history to earn First Team ALL-af2 status.

Cook’s play was a big reason why the Wolves boasted one of the best defenses in the league. The two-time af2 ADT Defensive Player of the Week Award winner was Mohegan’s top lineman in 2003, registering a team-record 11.5 sacks. The Harlem, NY native also set a team record for most sacks tallied in a single game (3.5 vs. Bossier City, July 5). In the postseason, Cook was just as impressive in the Wolves’ 50-47 first round victory at Cape Fear, recording a game-high two sacks, including one on the final play of the game to clinch the team’s first-ever playoff win.

Cook, however, wasn’t the only Wolves player receiving recognition by the league for his individual play. Rookie offensive specialist Mel Long earned American Conference ALL-af2 Second Team honors after leading Mohegan in receptions (81), receiving yards (1,277) and touchdowns (29). Long had an explosive late season surge, catching 38 passes for 629 yards and 14 touchdowns over the final five games of the regular season. The Toledo, OH native didn’t slow down in the playoffs either, catching 18 passes for 287 yards and seven touchdowns in just two games.

“Charlie and Mel had tremendous seasons for us and are well-deserving of this honor,” Mohegan Head Coach Mark Stoute said. “They are both quality individuals who worked hard to improve themselves over the course of the year.

For the first time in history, the League named an ALL-af2 First and Second Team for each conference using votes collected from af2 head coaches and members of the media.

The Wolves finished the 2003 season at 11-7 overall (10-6 regular season, 1-1 postseason) and earned a trip to the playoffs for the first time in team history.
