af2 Announces Players of the Week

August 12, 2003 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - Arkansas quarterback RICKY HEBERT, Tulsa wide receiver/ linebacker MITCH ALLNER and Macon's fullback/linebacker BRYON DOUZART have been named Offensive Player, Ironman and ADT Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for the Semifinal Round of the 2003 ArenaCup Playoffs.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Hebert (6-1, 210, American International), in his third season, put in a gallant performance to lead the Twisters to a 63-61 victory over first seed Quad City. It was the first time in five attempts that Arkansas was able to defeat the Steamwheelers. Hebert fueled the Twister's potent offense by completing 24-of-37 passes for 319 yards and six touchdowns. With Hebert calling the plays, the Twisters scored on 10 out of 12 possessions with one of the non-scoring drives ending at the half and the other on a missed field goal. The field general spread the ball around, connecting with eight different receivers. KEVIN WILLIAMS was his favorite target, and ended the game with 10 receptions for 143 yards and three scores. Hebert finished the game interception free.

IRONMAN OF THE WEEK

Allner (6-0, 195, Morningside College), in his fourth season, earns Ironman of the Week honors after a stellar all-round performance in the Talon's 58-38 second round playoff victory versus Hawaii. Allner's experience was decisive as he hooked up with CRAIG STRICKLAND on a 10-yard score for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. That score overturned a 38-37 deficit with 3:06 remaining in the game and sparked two more unanswered Talon scores. The Morningside product finished the game with four catches for 29 yards and three touchdowns on offense. On special teams, Allner returned two kickoffs for 80 yards and a missed field goal for six. Defensively, the af2 veteran made 2.5 tackles, one for a loss, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass.

ADT DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Douzart (6-2, Tennessee-Martin), in his third season, helped the Knights continue their Cinderella season with a strong defensive effort in their 59-47 victory at Albany. With two offensive scores it was easy to overlook Douzart's defensive contributions, however, the second year player proved to be a difference maker. With 47 seconds remaining in the game, and Albany fighting back, Douzart sacked RYAN VENA on third and 12 forcing the Conquest to go for it on fourth and 20. Vena's fourth down pass fell incomplete and Macon ran out the clock. Earlier in the game, on a threatening Conquest drive, Douzart recovered a PHIL TAYLOR fumble at the Macon 8-yard line. On the ensuing possession, JERMAINE ALFRED led the Knights to pay dirt. Douzart finished the game with three tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery.

Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Mohegan's Mel Long, Tennessee Valley's Jerrian James, Arkansas' Ricky Hebert, and Tulsa's Craig Strickland.

Ironman of the Week candidates included: Tennessee Valley's Jerrian James, Albany's Rashon Burns, Arkansas' Lennie Johnson, Quad City's Tim Dodge and Tulsa's Mitch Allner.

ADT Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Tennessee Valley's Calvin Hall, Macon's Denario Smalls, Macon's Byron Douzart, Quad City's Jamaal Cherry, Tulsa's Al Hunt, and Arkansas' Kahlil Carter.
