Warriors Stop Spurs, Close in on a Playoff Spot

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors (28-19) defeated the Austin Spurs (22-24) 106-103 on Thursday night at the H-E-B Center at Cedar Park.

The Warriors were paced by Phil Pressey who led all scorers with 24 points. Damian Jones, on assignment from the Golden State Warriors, notched a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. James Southerland finished with 11 points and 8 rebounds while Kevon Looney, playing on assignment from Golden State, added 10 points and 8 rebounds.

Orlando Johnson led the Spurs with 17 points, while Ryan Arcidiacono contributed 16 points. Charles Garcia came off the bench to add 15 points for Austin, while Daniel Nwaelele scored 13 points.

The opening frame was a tightly-contested battle that saw 4 ties and 3 lead changes with neither team leading by more than two possessions. The Warriors trailed 23-22 at the end of the first quarter.

The even play continued through the second quarter as Damian Jones and Phil Pressey paced the visitors with 10 points apiece for Santa Cruz in the frame. After 6 lead changes and 5 ties, Austin would take a two-point edge into the locker room,

The Spurs finished the third frame shooting 52.4% from the field, expanding their lead to as many as 7 points in the third frame, marking the first time either team held more than a two-possession lead.

After trailing by as many as 8 points in the final frame, a jump-shot from Phil Pressey with 9.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter would give the Warriors a one-point lead. Two made free-throws from Terrence Drisdom, who was fouled grabbing a missed three from Jeff Ledbetter, would put Santa Cruz up 3 points with 3.7 seconds left in regulation. With a chance to tie the game, Jeff Ledbetter made a three-pointer with time expiring, though an official review would reveal that he did not release the shot in time.

The Santa Cruz Warriors will travel to El Segundo, California to take on the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Saturday, Mar. 25 at 6:30 p.m. PST at Toyota Sports Center. Fans can catch the game on Facebook Live by visiting the Santa Cruz Warriors' Facebook page at tip-off.
