Warriors Defeat the Spurs in Wire-To-Wire Battle

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors (18-14) defeated the Austin Spurs (15-18) 113-110 on Saturday night in front of a twenty-second consecutive sellout crowd at Kaiser Permanente Arena.

The Warriors were paced by Scott Wood who led all scorers with 27 points and 4 rebounds. LaDontae Henton contributed 19 points, while Chris Obekpa notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Spurs were led by Charles Garcia who scored 20 points and 4 rebounds. Hollis Thompson added 16 points, while Cory Jefferson and Daniel Nwaelele put up 12 points a-piece.

The opening minutes of the first frame would set the tone for a tight-knit game between the Warriors and the Spurs. Austin would have a 77.8% team shooting ---effort from beyond-the-arc, edging Santa Cruz's 33.3%. With 7 lead changes, the Spurs ended the frame 3 possessions ahead of the Warriors.

The Spurs maintained the momentum in the beginning of the second frame to lead the Warriors by as many as 11 points in the second frame. Santa Cruz's 12-0 run helped the hosts regain the lead by the 4:26 mark. Santa Cruz capitalized on second chance opportunities, out-working Austin 10-0. Scott Wood fueled the offense scoring 13 of his 27 points in the frame, helping Santa Cruz to a three-point lead heading into the locker room.

The third quarter would take an emotional turn after a technical foul was called on James Southerland at the 7:56 mark. The Warriors would go on to receive a total of 4 technical fouls in the span of 5 minutes. Despite the frustration in the third, Santa Cruz would fight to maintain their lead to enter the final frame 82-80.

The Warriors outscored the Spurs by 11 points in the final frame, pulling ahead by as many as 17 points while never trailing. Scott Wood shot 100% from the field in the fourth, including 3 three-pointers, accounting for 11 points of his 27-point performance.

The Santa Cruz Warriors will take on the Oklahoma City Blue at Oracle Arena tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. The game, which marks the first time that Golden State's D-League affiliate has played at Oracle Arena, is expected to establish a new single-game D-League attendance record. The current D-League attendance record is held by Raptors 905, who drew 15,011 to the Air Canada Centre on December 20, 2016.
