Maine Celtics News Release

Hidalgo, TX - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, struggled on both ends of the floor Wednesday night, falling to Rio Grande Valley, 137-111. After a seven game winning streak, Maine (28-19) has now lost four straight games.

The Claws were led by Coty Clarke and James Young, both on assignment from the Boston Celtics. Clarke led Maine with 22 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists, while Young added 21 points and 6 boards. Omari Johnson scored 15 for Maine, Levi Randolph added 13 off the bench, and Marcus Thornton poured in 10 points for the Red Claws.

The Red Claws hung with the Vipers (25-20) in the first quarter. Both teams traded baskets, with Randolph leading the charge for Maine. Young dropped in a three to put the Claws up three, and Randolph's lay-up late in the period made it a 29-29 game after one quarter.

Rio Grande Valley took command of the game in the second, scoring 44 points. Montrezl Harrell, on assignment from the Houston Rockets, and Raphiael Putney put on a show with high-flying dunks, and in the blink of an eye the Vipers held a double-digit lead and never looked back. Clarke and Coron Williams made back-to-back three's to help close out the quarter, but still Maine trailed 73-57 at halftime, with RGV shooting 62% from the field in the first two quarters.

The Vipers did not let their foot off the gas in the second half. RGV converted three straight three-point plays, extending the lead to 21. By the end of the 3rd, the Vipers surged to a 109-81 lead. RGV led by as many as 32 in the 4th quarter. Clarke and Young made three-pointers to keep Maine's offense moving in the final period, but it was too little, too late.

Maine next travels to Austin to play the Spurs Friday night. Austin leads the Southwestern Division. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. EST. Maine's regular season home finale is next Thursday, March 31 vs. Delaware. Tickets are on sale by calling 207-210-6655 or visiting MaineRedClaws.com.
