Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
Shreveport, La. - The Shreveport-Bossier Captains announced the hiring of Vince Moore as Bench Coach for the 2009 season. The Houston native will join manager Ricky VanAsselberg as part of the coaching staff.
Moore made his managerial debut as skipper of the now-defunct Central Baseball League's Edinburg Roadrunners in 2005, becoming the second manager in the club's history. He posted a 49-45 record and led his squad to its fifth consecutive post-season berth. Moore then became the first manager of the Edinburg Coyotes of United League Baseball in 2006 and led them to a 17-0 start during their inaugural season. The Coyotes then went on to put up the best regular season record in the league with 57-33 and played in the first United League Championship Series under Moore's leadership, ultimately falling to VanAsselberg's Alexandria Aces.
"Even though Ricky and I have competed against each other in opposing dugouts the last few years, I respect him as a manager and I am excited to join him and the Captains this season," Moore said.
VanAsselberg also put the two's past rivalry behind him. "Vince is a great baseball guy who can really help our team out," he said. "I look forward to working with him and helping trying to bring a championship to the Shreveport-Bossier area."
Moore was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the fifth round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Draft. In 1993, he was then sent to the San Diego Padres along with two other players for Fred McGriff. The former outfielder made it as high as double-A, in 1994 and 1996. He was a member of the California League-champion Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 1993 He then went on to play for Edinburg, winning the Central League title in 2004 before retiring at the age of 32. In his career, Moore hit .249 with 71 homers and 422 RBI in 837 games.
The Shreveport-Bossier Captains open the 2009 season in Pensacola on May 14, and will be on the road for the first series of their 2009 campaign. The Shreveport-Bossier Captains' first game at Fair Grounds Field will be May 19, against Grand Prairie.
