
Spurs Silence Vipers to Close Day One at NBA D-League Showcase

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario- The Austin Spurs (10-15) defeated the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (16-11), 119-100, on Wednesday at the 2017 NBA Development League Showcase.
Cory Jefferson scored a team-best 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting to go with 12 rebounds as the Spurs snapped their two-game skid. Austin's reserves outscored Rio Grande Valley's bench 61-28 as the Spurs handed the Vipers their second straight loss.
Rio Grande Valley was led by Darius Morris' 23-point, 10-assist, five-rebound performance and Chinanu Onuaku's 20 points and game-best 15 rebounds.
JP Tokoto led the Vipers in the first quarter with 11 points, which included 4-of-6 shooting from the field, and helped Rio Grande Valley to a 30-24 lead at the end of the first period. The Spurs had eight players score a basket and received 18 of their 24 first-quarter points from their reserves.
Through two quarters, all 10 Austin players had scored a basket as the Spurs used a 34-point second quarter to take a 58-53 lead at the half. Charles Garcia and Maurice Bolden each came off the bench to score nine points apiece for Austin. Darius Morris finished the first half with 13 points on five-of-seven shooting to go with seven assists. The first half featured five lead changes and eight ties.
Austin's bench continued lead the charge, scoring 54 of the Spurs' 87 points through three quarters, while the Rio Grande Valley's reserves tallied 23 of the Vipers' 81 points. Morris notched six more points in the third quarter and also added two more assists.
Jarell Eddie contributed 17 points, including four three-pointers, and Patricio Garino and Jeff Ledbetter scored 16 points apiece off the bench for Austin, which trailed by as many as eight before mounting a comeback and earning its 10th victory of the season.
Austin will play its final game of the showcase on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. ET against the Northern Arizona Suns on ESPNU. Rio Grande Valley plays its next and final game on Saturday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. ET vs. the Iowa Energy on NBA TV.
