Six run fifth pushes Jaxx back even with Smokies atop Division

JACKSON, TENN. (SEPTEMBER 3, 2009) - The Diamond Jaxx (35-31) move back into a first place tie with the Tennessee Smokies (35-31) with a 8-3 victory over the Smokies on Thursday night at Pringles Park. In front of 2, 374 fans, the Jaxx rallied for six runs in the fifth inning and cruised on to a series opening win over the Smokies. Marshall Hubbard and Ezequiel Carrera smacked three-hit games for the Jaxx while Johan Limonta and Travis Garcia each tallied two hit games. Robert Rohrbaugh (3-3) scattered eight hits over six innings and allowed three runs to record only his second win since April 25th. For the Smokies, they were led offensively by Marquez Smith and Russ Canzler who launched back-to-back homers in the fourth inning. The Jaxx and Smokies sit tied with four games remaining, while Chattanooga trails each by a game.

The Smokies rallied with two outs in the top of the first inning to jump on the scoreboard first. Ty Wright split the left-center gap and doubled with two outs. The next hitter, Blake Lalli drove home Wright with a single, putting the Smokies on top, 1-0.

In the top of the fourth inning, Marquez Smith and Russ Canzler each hit solo homeruns, pushing the Smokies lead to 3-0. Robert Rohrbaugh gave up back-to-back homers for the first time this season.

The Diamond Jaxx rallied though by scoring six times off of Smokies starter, Chris Carpenter (0-3) in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Jaxx did all their damage with two outs as Greg Halman brought home Jose Yepez with a single and then Ezequiel Carrera came around to score on an error by centerfielder, Jim Adduci. The Jaxx trailed 3-2. The next batter, Marshall Hubbard drove home Halman with a single tying the game at three each. Johan Limonta followed with an RBI double plating Hubbard, giving the Jaxx their first lead. Reliever Dustin Sasser gave up a two-RBI single to Travis Garcia which put the Jaxx on top 6-3.

Jaxx starter, Robert Rohrbaugh (3-3) went six innings and surrendered three runs on eight hits. Rohrbaugh struck out five and walked one in the outing.

The Jaxx added another run in the seventh inning on an RBI groundout by Matt Mangini, plating Marshall Hubbard. Hubbard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth inning and led it over the Smokies 8-3.

Kyle Parker earned a hold and worked two scoreless innings for the Jaxx in relief and Anthony Varvaro dealt a scoreless ninth inning, walking two and fanning two.

The Jaxx and Smokies play game two on Friday night at Pringles Park, beginning at 7:05. RHP Luis Munoz (8-6, 3.87) takes the mound for the D-Jaxx while LHP Jeremy Papelbon (6-5, 3.24) toes the rubber for the Smokies. The Jaxx are 12-33 when facing left-handed starters this season.
