SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors were named "Business of the Year" earlier tonight at the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce's Annual Community Recognition Gala at the Cocoanut Grove. The Warriors were nominated by members of the business community and recognized for their achievement in operations excellence and significant contributions to the people and communities of Santa Cruz County.
"It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Santa Cruz Area Chamber of Commerce as Business of the Year," said Santa Cruz Warriors President Chris Murphy. "Our success in Santa Cruz bears testament to the power of the incredible group of people in our organization and the passionate community who has supported us since day one." After winning the D-League Championship in 2015, the Warriors accomplished the following over the past year:
Renewed over 80% of their season ticket holders for the 2016-17 season, while growing the season ticket holder membership base from the year before.
Led the NBA D-League in regular season national TV appearances with 4 broadcasts on ESPNU.
Participated in over 150 community events, the most events in a single calendar year in franchise history, benefiting local organizations including CASA of Santa Cruz County, Digital NEST, local schools, and the Veteran's Memorial Hall.
Raised more than $60,000 for local nonprofits through philanthropic events, Community Jersey Nights, and in-game fundraising including Boys and Girls Club, Santa Cruz City Schools, Salvation Army, Easter Seals, and the Santa Cruz MAH.
Generated a collective growth of over 75,000 combined followers on Warriors social media platforms.
Developed basketball players to NBA Call-Ups, All-Star game invitations, monthly League Honors; totaling 18 NBA Call-ups under Head Coach Casey Hill
Secured the award of the 12th annual NBA D-League Showcase, for the second consecutive year, which generated more than 1,100 hotel nights for the City of Santa Cruz, increasing hotel occupancy rates in the tourism off-season over the course of the five-day event.
Hosted 4,025 students over the course of two days for the team's "Math Warriors" initiative, a unique educational opportunity that integrated the Showcase basketball games into the Santa Cruz City Schools' math curriculum.
Generated the growth of the Warriors' Read to Achieve program which now reaches 6,000 local youth, with schools in Santa Cruz County reading more than 1 billion words during the program's four-year tenure.
Launched "Get Fit" as an institutionalized health, wellness, and fitness program projected to reach 10,000 youth in the first year.
The Chamber of Commerce Awards consist of six categories: Man of the Year, Woman of the Year, Business of the Year, Organization of the Year, Entrepreneur of the Year, and a Lifetime Achievement Award. The 2016 winners were recognized for excellence and outstanding achievements and contributions to the people and communities of Santa Cruz County.
