RED CLAWS ERASE 20-POINT DEFICIT TO BEAT BAYHAWKS
Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, overcame a 20-point deficit after the 1st quarter to win by 20, defeating the Erie BayHawks Friday night 113-93.
The Red Claws (8-6) were led by Boston Celtics Two-Way Player Jabari Bird, who finished with 31 points (13-17 shooting) and 9 rebounds. Fellow Celtics Two-Way Player Kadeem Allen added 17 points and 9 boards, while Andrew White, Trey Davis and Devin Williams all scored 13 points each.
Erie (5-10) was led by Raphiael Putney with 25 points (9-11 FG).
The BayHawks started the game with Raphiael Putney scoring the first 5 points. Erie dropped in 4 of its first 6 shots before Devin Willams' three-point play cut it to 10-5. Atlanta Hawks Two-Way Player Josh Magette made 2 of his first 3 shots, and Putney continued his hot shooting, countered by Williams on the low block. Putney's alley-oop slam made him 5-for-5 from the floor, and gave Erie a 22-12 lead. The BayHawks continued to force the issue, running the floor at will for three consecutive fast-break lay-ups. Suddenly, Erie's lead was 34-14 after a 16-2 run to cap off the 1st quarter.
Trey Davis stopped the bleeding to open the 2nd quarter, dropping in a floater from the elbow. Williams continued to shine on both ends of the floor - his three-point play cut it to 18, then Josh Adeyeye's triple made it 38-23 BayHawks with 8:34 to go in the half. Allen and Bird nailed back-to-back treys to cut the deficit to 9. Daniel Dixon's strong drive to the rim made it 43-34 BayHawks. Bird's lay-up was followed up by a Davis steal, leading to two free throws by Bird. In the blink of an eye, it was 43-37. Bird's put-back plus the foul made it 43-40. Allen's put-back cut it to 1. Erie's lead at the break was 55-49. Maine shot just 37.3% (19-51) from the floor in the first half, while Erie shot 55.3% (21-38).
In the 3rd, Putney rattled in a three to make it 61-53 BayHawks. Andrew White heated up - his wing three cut it to 63-62. Erie proceeded to go on an 11-2 run, stopped by White's alley-oop slam from Davis. Putney had the answer - his rainbow three made it 77-67. The Red Claws followed that up with 6 straight points, capped off by Allen's free throws off of a steal. Peak's bucket made it 77-75. In the final seconds of the quarter, Bird drained a long three to give Maine its first lead of the game. The Red Claws led 82-80 after 3 quarters, with Bird scoring 24 points in the first three frames.
In the final quarter, Allen gave Maine a 4 point lead with a lay-in early on. Davis caught fire for the Claws - his deep three made it a 91-82 lead and the Red Claws went on an 11-0 run. Bird took over the 4th quarter, making back-to-back buckets. The Red Claws opened the quarter on a 19-4 run, extending the lead to 103-86. Bird's three put the game away for good. Maine would cruise from there. The Red Claws wound up shooting 41.8% (42-97) from the field, 26.7% (8-30) from downtown, and 21-28 from the free throw line. Erie finished shooting 41.8% (33-79) for the game, 29.6% (8-27) from deep, and 19-22 from the charity stripe.
Maine returns to action tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. showdown with the Texas Legends.
