Red Claws Fall in Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids, MI - December 22, 2017 - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, struggled shooting from the outside and could not get back into the game in the second half, falling to the Grand Rapids Drive 113-95.

Maine (10-9) was led by Trey Davis with 26 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Boston Celtics Two-Way Player Jabari Bird added 21 points and 8 boards. Andrew White and L.J. Peak scored 10 points each, and Devin Williams grabbed 11 rebounds.

Grand Rapids (11-10) was led by Jamel Morris with 26 points and Landy Nnoko with 25.

Both teams started the game back-and-forth - Daniel Dingle's lay-up gave Maine a 5-4 early lead. The Drive would quickly take over the 1st quarter, with the former Marcus Thornton leading the charge. Grand Rapids surged out to a 9 point lead. L.J. Peak led Maine back, scoring a couple of quick buckets. At the end of the 1st, Grand Rapids held a 25-20 lead.

In the 2nd, Josh Adeyeye opened the period with a three-pointer. Bird slammed home a second-chance dunk, thanks to an offensive board and assist by Devin Williams. Trey Davis' free-throw jumper cut it to 34-30 Drive. Grand Rapids would maintain its lead, as Jamel Morris' lay-in made it 41-34 Drive, and K.J. McDaniels' fast break slam put Grand Rapids up 11. Davis stopped the bleeding with a trey to cut it to 51-41, but Morris knocked in back-to-back threes of his own to make it a 14-point lead. Morris scored 20 points in the first half, and Thornton's buzzer-beating lay-up gave Grand Rapids took a 60-46 halftime lead. Maine shot just 5-19 from downtown in the first two quarters of play.

The 3rd quarter started with the Drive scoring 5 quick points, including on a Morris three-point play. Davis scored 4 straight for the Claws, cutting the deficit to 65-50. Zeke Upshaw ended that Maine run with a long three of his own, and the Drive extended to a 20 point lead at the free throw line. White scored 4 straight points, streaking to the basket for lay-ins. McDaniels' lay-up made it 80-59 Drive. Daniel Dixon dropped in a lay-in, but Thornton answered with one of his own. Grand Rapids led 86-69 after three.

In the 4th, both teams traded buckets early. Speedy Smith buried a triple to make it 98-75. Bronson Koenig dropped in a corner triple to extend the lead from there. Off of a couple of Landy Nnoko blocks, Upshaw knocked in a triple to make it 111-81. The Red Claws would go on a 6-0 run, but could not get any closer. Maine shot 43% (37-87) from the field, and just 29% (12-42) from three-point range and 9-13 from the free throw line. Grand Rapids shot 47% (43-91) from the floor, 30% (12-40) from deep, and 15-20 from the charity stripe.
