Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Lancaster, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes endured a tough Sunday afternoon, letting a late lead slip away, as the Lancaster JetHawks rallied to score a 7-6 win at The Hangar.

Zach Reks homered twice and had three extra-base hits, including a game-tying homer in the eighth, after the Quakes had blown a three-run lead in the seventh. But an unearned run in the last of the eighth inning gave Lancaster the lead for good and two out of three in the three-game series.

Leading 5-2 in the seventh, reliever Chris Mathewson, who worked a 1-2-3 sixth, struggled to throw strikes.  After walking the bases loaded, Mathewson allowed a two-run single to Manny Melendez, as the JetHawks pulled to within a run at 5-4. Joel Diaz followed with an RBI groundout, evening the game at 5-5. Jason Richman was then summoned into the game and after walking the first hitter he faced, struck out Alan Trejo for the second out. Richman couldn't preserve the tie though, as Colton Welker followed with an RBI double, putting Lancaster up 6-5.

Reks, who homered in the fourth to give the Quakes a 3-2 lead, went deep again with one out in the eighth off eventual winner Bryan Baker (1-0), tying the game at 6-6.

In the last of the eighth though, the JetHawks took advantage of the only error of the day for the Quakes. Gavin Lux misplayed a one-out grounder off the bat of Vince Fernandez. One batter later, Max George doubled off Richman (1-1) to score what turned out to be the game-winner.

Reid Humphreys worked around a two-out walk in the ninth, striking out Logan Landon to end the game and earn his sixth save of the year.

Omar Estevez had three hits for the Quakes, who outhit Lancaster, 14-6.

Rancho starter Tony Gonsolin settled for a no-decision after his best start of the year, as he tossed five innings of two-run, three-hit baseball with five strikeouts and just one walk.

The Quakes (11-13) are now two games back of Lancaster in the South Division and will return home to LoanMart Field on Monday, opening a four-game series against the defending league champion Modesto Nuts. Isaac Anderson (0-3) will take on Darren McCaughan (0-3) in the opener at 7:05pm. Tickets are available by calling (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. We hope to see you at LoanMart Field very soon...Go Quakes!
