
Late-Game Heroics Fall Short on Superhero Day

Des Moines, Iowa - The Iowa Energy (11-30) used a 30-21 fourth quarter to have a shot to tie on the team's final possession of the game but ultimately fell short, losing 111-108 to the Santa Cruz Warriors (25-17) Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.
The Energy used a 15-2 run to start the fourth quarter, taking a 93-92 lead with 7:25 remaining. It was Iowa's final lead of the game.
Down four with 11.3 seconds remaining, Terry Whisnant knocked down three free throws to make the score 108-107. A quick dunk by the Warriors' Cleanthony Early gave the Energy one last possession, but a turnover sealed their fate as they were unable to get a shot off.
It was the team's fifth straight home loss.
Whisnant came off the bench to score a team-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. The 14 boards was a career-high for the second year guard out of East Carolina.
Whisnant scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter and finished 4-of-8 from the three-point line.
All three Memphis Grizzlies assignees finished in double figures.
Deyonta Davis captured his first double-double in the D-League, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. The Michigan St. center shot an efficient 7-of-12 from the field.
Wade Baldwin IV tallied 15 points, four rebounds and four assists in the loss. Jarell Martin added 16 points.
Iowa outrebounded Santa Cruz 57-39 and led in second chance points (20-7), fast break points (29-18) and points in the paint (44-36).
JaKarr Sampson chipped in 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench for Iowa.
Scott Wood finished with a team-high 22 points for Santa Cruz, knocking down 8-10 field goal attempts, including 4-of-6 from deep.
The Iowa Energy continue their five game homestand tomorrow night against the Texas Legends at 7:00 p.m.
