Hagerstown Suns News Release

HAGERSTOWN, MD -- The Hagerstown Suns (20-21) suffered their third-straight defeat at the hands of the Hickory Crawdads (23-21) on Monday afternoon, dropping back below .500 with a 6-0 loss that was anything but quiet.

The Hagerstown bats were stifled by the Crawdad pitching combo of starter Jake Brigham (2-2) and reliever Martin Perez, who combined for 17 strikeouts while walking just three. The Suns' frustrations boiled over in the sixth inning, as hitting coach Tony Tarasco, pitching coach Rich Gale, and designated hitter Derek Norris were ejected in order while arguing balls and strikes during a Norris at bat.

The Suns mustered seven hits over the course of the game, but went hitless in eight at bats with runners in scoring position. Each Hagerstown hitter struck out at least once, as Brigham shut the Suns down over the first five innings before Perez came in for a four-inning, nine-strikeout save. The 17 strikeouts were one shy of the Suns season high, surpassed only by the 18 strikeouts Hagerstown amassed on April 23 against Lakewood.

The Memorial Day contest was scoreless through four innings, as Suns starter Paul Demny (1-3) matched Brigham zero for zero, ultimately allowing just one run through five innings with six strikeouts.

After Hickory picked up single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take a 2-0 lead, the Crawdads put the game away in the ninth with four runs off Hagerstown reliever Osvaldo Rodriguez. Prior to the game, Rodriguez had allowed only three earned runs through 17 and two thirds innings on the season, meaning Monday's outing more than doubled his earned run average, from 1.53 to 3.38.

Four Hickory hitters had two hits on the day as the Crawdads took three games out of four from Hagerstown. Shortstop Jose Lozada was the only player with a multi-hit game for the Suns, picking up two hits out of the leadoff spot to raise his batting average to .273 on the year.

The Suns will continue their homestand on Tuesday with a 6:35 p.m. game against Kannapolis, the first contest of a four-game series.
