AVON, Ohio -- The Lake Erie Crushers, presented by Mercy, fell into an early hole on Saturday night at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium, and were never able to recover, falling to the Gateway Grizzlies, 9-1.

The loss for the Crushers (11-15) was their second in their last three games, while the win for the Grizzlies (7-19) was just their second in their last six games.

Gateway capitalized on three errors over the first two innings of the contest, staging a 6-1 lead over the first two innings of action and never looked back.

The Grizzlies took advantage of three singles and a throwing error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Cody Livesay reached on a bunt base hit, and Steve Hagen's errant throw to first base allowed Livesay to reach third on the play. Livesay scored moments later on Matt Hearn's bunt base hit, and Craig Massoni drove Hearn home later in the inning on a RBI single through the left side of the infield.

Gateway added four more in the top of the second to take a 6-0 lead. It all started when Garrett Mattledge reached on a one out error committed by Lake Erie first baseman Josh McAdams. Hagen then hit Chase Simmons with a pitch before Livesay singled to load the bases. Hearn followed by blasting a three-run triple to the gap in right-center. On the play, Max Casper's errant relay throw to third skipped into the seats, and the errant throw allowed Hearn to score.

The Crushers scored their only run of the night in the bottom of the second. Cody Lenehan started the inning with a walk, and made his way to second on a single from McAdams before scoring on Tanner Lubach's RBI single to center.

Gateway answered with a run in the next half inning, taking a 7-1 lead in the top of the third. Anthony Caronia started the inning with a single, moved to second on a walk issued to Josh Bunselmeyer, and scored on Chase Simmons's RBI single.

The Grizzlies added two more runs in the top of the eighth. The inning started on back-to-back walks to Bunselmeyer and Mattledge, and Simmons followed with a RBI single to right. Later in the inning, Hearn drove Mattledge in on a sac fly RBI.

Vince Molesky (2-4) pitched very well in a winning effort for the Grizzlies allowing just a run on four hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings of action. Steve Hagen (3-1) took the loss for the Crushers, despite retiring the final seven batters he faced. He allowed seven runs, five earned on seven hits with four strikeouts over six innings. It was a slow night for the Crushers offensively, as Brandon Murray was the only Crusher to hit safely, doing so twice on the night, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

The Crushers will finish their three-game series with the Gateway Grizzlies at Sprenger Healthcare Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Jordan Kurokawa (1-1, 3.06) will make the start for the Crushers and the Grizzlies will counter with right-hander Will Anderson (0-4, 6.75). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM.
