Ottawa Champions News Release

Ottawa, ON - Wednesday's game was a back and forth affair from the start, but it was the Ottawa Champions who finished on a high note as they edged the Quebec Capitales 4-3 to complete a three game sweep.

The win draws Ottawa within two games of the Capitales in the standings, as the two teams jostle for third place.

Champions manager Hal Lanier was thrilled with the win, but isn't lingering on any races in the standings.

"We just have to take it one game at a time," he said. "I'm not big on looking at the big picture. We have a big series coming up against Trois-Rivieres and we'll have to be good."

Derrick Pyles and Kenny Bryant both had RBI singles in the first, then Alexander Malleta had his first sacrifice fly of the day to make the score 3-0.

Quebec put up their first run of the game a half-inning later, then the middle of the order finally broke through in the fifth.

Cleanup hitter Jordan Lennerton singled to make the score 3-2, then Marcus Knecht, hitting fifth in the order, drove home the game-tying run with another base hit.

Ottawa bounced back in the sixth with more help from their Cuban veteran Malleta. His second sacrifice fly of the game was hit deep into the right-centre gap, and scored Pyles from third.

New acquisition Luis Munoz made his fourth appearance on the mound for Ottawa, and his first start. The Dominican threw five full innings, allowing six hits and three earned runs.

Relief pitcher Miles Moeller (W, 3-2) got credit for the victory. He was in the game when Ottawa re-took the lead, and threw for three full innings without allowing a hit.

"Munoz did pretty much what we expected him to do," Lanier said. He also gave a lot of credit to Moeller's outing in long relief of Munoz.

Randy Hamrick pitched the ninth for his first save of the season.

Quebec starter Sheldon McDonald (L, 2-6) was saddled with the loss after he surrendered eight hits and four runs in six innings. The Canadian from Stony Plain, Alta. also walked two and struck out two.

The Champions travel to Trois-Rivieres on Thursday for a four game series against the Aigles, their last one before the All Star break. Laetten Galbraith (1-6, 4.99 ERA) is slated to start the first game for Ottawa.
