Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE – The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League announced today that former Green Bay Packers defensive back Fred Vinson has been signed to the club's active roster for this weekend's showdown with the Columbus Destroyers. The team also announced the release of lineman Nate Bell.

Vinson (5-11, 180, Vanderbilt) enters his first season in the AFL after spending three seasons in the National Football League. Following a stellar four-year career at Vanderbilt, Vinson was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the second round (47th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft. He went on to enjoy a successful rookie campaign, appearing in all 16 games for Green Bay and recording 19 tackles, two interceptions and a sack. In April 2000, Vinson was acquired by the Seattle Seahawks in a trade that included running back Ahman Green. However, he was unable to appear in any games in a Seahawks uniform after suffering knee injuries in the 2000 and 2001 offseasons.

A native of North Augusta, SC, Vinson was originally signed to Carolina's practice squad on April 14. He will look to add speed and depth to a Cobras defensive backfield that has recently experienced the loss of starting defensive specialists Glenn Davis (injury) and Damon Mason (release).

Bell (6-6, 285, Southern) did not see any game action this season after being signed to the Cobras roster on March 19. A three-year AFL veteran, Bell recorded 25.0 tackles in 18 career games with the New York Dragons from 2001-2003. The former Southern University standout began the 2004 campaign on the training camp roster for the Philadelphia Soul, but was released prior to the opening of the season.

Carolina hosts the Columbus Destroyers this Saturday, May 1 at the Charlotte Coliseum. The Eastern Division battle with the Ohio squad will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. (EST). The festivities surrounding the contest include a pregame blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross (4:00 – 8:30 p.m.) and halftime entertainment featuring Live Action Wrestling superstars Buff Bagwell, Rick Steiner, Money Mike and Tommy Gunn.

Cobras' flex plans and group tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 877-4-COBRAS or visiting www.cobrasfootball.com. Individual game tickets are available at the Charlotte Coliseum box office or at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 704-522-6500.
