Canton Holds off 87ers as Late Shot Bounces Out

Delaware Blue Coats News Release
NEWARK, DE - FEBRUARY 13, 2018 - The Delaware 87ers (11-26) dropped a heartbreaker to the Canton Charge (14-23) 110-108 at the Bob Carpenter Center. Askia Booker had a chance to win the game with a three as time expired, but his shot went in and out and the Sevens once again lost in devastating fashion.
Here are three takeaways from the 87ers' game against Canton:
The Sevens can't catch a break late
In previous games this season, Furkan Korkmaz and James Blackmon Jr. both hit shots that looked to be threes, but ended up being twos. Those games ended in losses. This time, the shot didn't go in, as Askia Booker's three-point attempt off an offensive rebound and kick out just missed. The shame of it is that Booker had a wonderful game, finishing with 20 points, nine assists and just one turnover. Fans told Askia to keep his head up as he walked to the bench after the miss, and that's exactly what he should do. Without his play, the Sevens probably wouldn't have been in position to win late.
The bench was superb
It was an off night for Delaware's starters, but the bench came in and gave the team a much-needed lift. Cameron Oliver had 18 points (including some sick dunks) and Devin Robinson and Marc Loving both finished with 12 in a reserve role. In all, the bench put up 52 points and all five subs who saw court time scored at least four points.
Canton's backcourt was terrific
We figured that Marcus Thornton would be good, and he was, slapping up 26 points and adding four rebounds and five assists. But it was the play of his teammate Kevin Olekaibe that really turned heads. The UNLV product scored a game-high 33 points on just 18 shots, hitting rainbow threes and getting to the basket at will. His previous high this season was 23 points.
The 87ers hit the All-Star break and will get some needed rest. Their next game is Wednesday, Feb. 21 at Windy City.
