Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings News Release

Bossier City, La - The Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings will move onto the second round of the 2009 af2 playoffs after beating the Rio Grande Valley Dorados 56-46 at the CenturyTel Center Saturday night in front of 5,081 rowdy fans. The BattleWings drew first blood of the night when K Art Carmody nailed a 52 yard field goal to give the Wings' a 3-0 lead. Dorado's WR Rod Windsor gave his team the advantage on the scoreboard (7-3) when he hauled in a 12 touchdown pass from Nick Hill, but that lead was short lived as FB Jason Schule rumbled in the endzone from 8 yards out to give the BattleWings a 10-7 lead going into the 2nd quarter.

The second quarter began much like the 1st quarter as K Art Carmody extended the BattleWings' lead to 13-7 with a 28 yard field goal. Rod Windsor again answered Carmody's FG with a touchdown reception from 7 yards out to give the Dorados' a 14-13 lead. The Dorados never led the game again, but did tie the game at 20-20 at the end of the 1st half when DB Derrick Harris returned an interception 43 yards for a touchdown.

Wings' WR Buchie Ibeh started the second half scoring with a 15 yard touchdown reception to extend the=2 0BattleWings' lead to 26-20. Lou Vega then scored on a 4 yard touchdown reception, after the Wings' defense forced a turnover on downs, to push the lead to 33-20. The Dorados were able to strike back in the third quarter with a 19 yard touchdown catch by Brett Smith, but the ensuing PAT was blocked and returned for 2 points by Wings' LB Marvin Byrdsong. The BattleWings defense once again clamped down in the 3rd quarter, only allowing 6 points by the Dorados.

P.J. Berry electrified the crowd early in the 4th quarter with a 58 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to extend the Wings' lead to 42-33, but WR Brett Smith scored for the Dorados on the next possession to make it a 3 point affair with less than 8 minutes remaining in the game. Wings' TE Tommy Taggart caught the Dorados' off guard when he caught a short pass and rumbled 37 yards for a touchdown to give the Wings' a 49-39 advantage. Rod Windsor had another receiving touchdown (his 6th of the night) with 3:26 remaining, but Wings' WR Buchie Ibeh answered back with one of his own from 13 yards out to give the BattleWings a 56-46 lead. The Dorados still had life as they marched down the field on their next drive, but DB Pierre Lee picked off Dorados' QB Nick Hill and effectively ended the game with less than a minute remaining in the game.

The BattleWings will travel to Tulsa, Ok lahoma next week to take on the Tulsa Talons in the second round of the af2 Playoffs. The BattleWings have chartered a bus for fans wanting to go to the game.
