Bluefish Swamp Barnstormers With Late Rush
September 5, 2012 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
The Bridgeport Bluefish scored nine runs, four driven in by Luis Rodriguez, over the final two innings as Bridgeport rallied to batter the Lancaster Barnstormers, 12-5, Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Lancaster's march toward the Atlantic League record for wins in a season is on hold for a day with eight wins left to go.
The Barnstormers built a 4-0 lead over the first three innings on a big start by left fielder Fehlandt Lentini. He drove home two runs in the first inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Tommy Everidge. Lentini also doubled in the third and raced home on Ryan Harvey's second single of the game.
Bridgeport rallied for three off starter Mark Brackman in the fourth inning, the only runners the right-hander allowed over six innings of work. Lentini singled home Gilberto Mejia in the bottom of the fifth on what turned out to be the Barnstormers final hit of the night.
Ross Peeples and Joe Bateman got the Barnstormers through an uneventful seventh inning, but Jeff Bennett (4-7) could not keep the Fish in the net in the eighth.
Luis Figueroa and Prentice Redman started off the inning with singles. Both moved up on a chopper to short by Willis Otanez, and Figueroa scored when Luis Lopez grounded to second. With the tying run at third and two outs, Kennard Jones hit a roller on the right side. Gilberto Mejia made a diving stop, but could not get off a throw in time to get the fleet Jones as the tying run scored. Rodriguez then unloaded his ninth homer of the season to right for the 7-5 lead.
The Bridgeport tacked on five more in the ninth inning off Ching-Lung Lo and newcomer Joe Gannon. Rodriguez had the key hit, a two-run single to left on an 0-2 offering from Gannon.
Gilbert De La Vara (10-8) allowed seven hits and five runs in seven innings to record the win. The lefty, along with relievers Julio DePaula and Pat Bresnahan, retired the last 13 Barnstormers batters of the night.
The series continues on Wednesday. Lancaster will send Dwayne Pollok (12-2) to the mound to square off against right-hander Brad Thompson (3-4). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, starting at 6:45.
