Beach Bums Slammed in Joliet

JOLIET, IL - The Traverse City Beach Bums(41-52) never got on track in the middle game of this weekend's series against the Joliet Slammers(51-44), falling by the final score of 7-1.

Joliet scored right away in tonight's game, when Zarley Zalewski hit a solo homer in the first inning, his sixth of the season. In the second, with a runner at third, Phillip Bates grounded to short but the throw to first pulled the first baseman off the bag, making it 2-0. Mike Garza and Joe Staley each had RBI hits in the third to extend the Slammers lead to 4-0. The game was broke open in the fifth, when Casey Fletcher hit an RBI double then Joe Staley slammed a two-run homer, for his tenth of the season. The Beach Bums' lone run came in the top of the seventh when Elijah Trail led off with a double, moved to third on a fly out, then scored when Kendall Patrick singled to center.

Joliet's Spencer Medick earned the win to improve to 8-4, he went seven innings, allowing just one run on four hits, four walks, and struck out three. Kramer Champlin suffered the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits, two walks, and he fanned four. He falls to 5-7.

Tomorrow night, the Beach Bums and Joliet will play the rubber game of this series, and the final game of the regular season. The game's first pitch is scheduled for 6:05pm and Tom Willms will have the call starting at 5:45pm with the Miller Lite pre-game show on 101.9- The Bay.

The Beach Bums Box Office & Gift Shop is now open with new Fall hours: Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:30pm. Wuerfel Park is closed on weekend and holidays, including Labor Day. The only exception will be a special inter-squad scrimmage featuring Michigan State's baseball team. That's coming up on Saturday, September 17th at 11am. It is open to the public and admission is free of charge. There will be a meet and greet afterwards and the team will also sign autographs.
