
Austin Spurs to Honor Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton

AUSTIN, Texas - The Austin Spurs, presented by SWBC, will honor Travis County Sheriff Greg Hamilton as they celebrate Black History Month at Cedar Park Center on Sunday, Feb. 28, when Austin faces the Oklahoma City Blue at 5 p.m.
Sheriff Greg Hamilton is currently the highest-ranking law enforcement officer in Travis County. After earning a degree in criminal justice from Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University), Hamilton began his career in 1985 as a corrections officer in the Travis County Sheriff's Office, holding the positions of D.A.R.E. Officer, Mounted Patrol and Corrections Officer II. Hamilton was appointed Chief of Enforcement at the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) in 1994 and was selected to serve on the governor's DWI Task Force Advisory Board from 1996 to 2000. He was then elected president of the National Liquor Law Enforcement Association (NLLEA) and was a recipient of their Law Enforcement Agency of the Year Award in both 1996 and 2003. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) honored him with the Law Enforcement Leadership Award.
Hamilton was elected sheriff of Travis County in November of 2004. He has served since January of 2005 and announced in late 2015 that he would not be seeking reelection. In addition to serving as sheriff, Hamilton is a national speaker and trainer for the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) under the U.S. Department of Justice. He also helps United States colleges prevent binge drinking as a member of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) National College Commission Advisory Board and was honored with the organization's Difference Makers Award.
