Indy Eleven News Release
INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, October 1, 2014) - Indy Eleven Professional Soccer continued to add more power to its front line at the North American Soccer League's roster freeze deadline with the addition of forward Charlie Rugg. The 23-year-old striker comes to Indiana's Team on loan from Major League Soccer via the LA Galaxy, which loaned the striker to the USL PRO League's LA Galaxy II for their 2014 season. Per club policy, details of the agreement will not be released.
"Charlie Rugg has been one of many forwards options we've been scouting closely in recent months, and we're pleased to bring him on board for the close of our campaign," said Indy Eleven Head Coach/Director of Soccer Operations Juergen Sommer. "Charlie possesses speed that can really stretch defenses and athleticism that allows him to finish in front of goal in a variety of ways."
The addition of the 23-year-old Rugg bumps Indy Eleven's roster size up to 25 players, which is where it will stand for the club's remaining five games. Rugg will be eligible to play this Saturday, October 4, when Indy Eleven travels to Long Island to play the New York Cosmos at James M. Shuart Stadium (8:00 p.m. ET kickoff, live on NASLLive.com).
"I've heard good things about Indy Eleven being a strong organization, especially for a new club, so I'm excited to join the team," said Rugg. "There's a good core of talented players here. I'm just hoping to get some more game experience in, work on my skills and do what it takes to help Indy Eleven get some wins as the season winds down."
Rugg is in the midst of his second professional season after being selected by the Galaxy in the first round (19^th pick overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. The Roslindale, Mass., native made his MLS and LA Galaxy debut with back-to-back starts early in the 2013 campaign - which included his first professional goal in his debut at Real Salt Lake - and also appeared in two more MLS matches off the bench during his rookie season.
"I'd like to thank the LA Galaxy for working with us to bring Charlie Rugg into the ranks of Indy Eleven," said Indy Eleven President/General Manager Peter Wilt. "We made a commitment to improve the team as the season continued, and we've used every last day we had to do just that. Charlie's skills and experience in a championship-caliber environment will certainly add to the squad as we close out the season."
While Rugg did not appear in any first-team games for the Galaxy in 2014, he was a mainstay for the LA Galaxy II squad that debuted in the USL PRO League this year, notching eight goals and three assists in 25 appearances. Rugg bagged both goals for Los Dos in their 2-3 defeat to eventual USL PRO champion Sacramento Republic FC in a semifinal round playoff contest just two weekends ago.
A four-year contributor while at Boston College from 2009-2012, Rugg ended his run with the Golden Eagles as a two-time All-ACC First Team performer during his junior and senior years. During his high school days at The Rivers School in Weston, Mass., Rugg's accolades included a spot on the NSCAA/Adidas High School All-American Team and the NSCAA/Adidas Massachusetts Player of the Year and Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year honors in 2008-2009.
