Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders express condolences to the family of Lionel Gundry-White. Believed to be the last surviving member of the original Calgary Stampeders team in 1945, Gundy-White passed away on Sunday, July 20 at the age of 92.

Gundry-White was a native Calgarian who joined the Stampeders when they were formed in 1945. A halfback, he played with the West End Tornadoes juniors before spending three-and-a-half years in the Canadian Navy. He was previously a waterboy for the Calgary Bronks, the professional team that preceded the Stamps.

Gundry-White remained a strong supporter of the Stampeders when he retired from football in 1946 to pursue a career in banking. He was a season-ticket holder for almost six decades and attended a game at McMahon Stadium as recently as last month.

He is survived by his wife Etta, son David, two grandchildren and brother Clifford.
