Mavericks Introduce Richard Matvichuk as New Head Coach

Independence, Missouri - June 6, 2014 -- The Missouri Mavericks introduced Richard Matvichuk as the new head coach at a press conference on Thursday morning at Independence Events Center.

"When Brent Thiessen offered me the position, I couldn't get back to the phone quick enough," said Matvichuk, "Mavericks fans deserve a championship, and it's now my job to bring them one. We're going to win, and we're going to have a good time doing it."

Matvichuk is a 14-year National Hockey League (NHL) veteran, drafted First-Round, 8th overall, by the Minnesota North Stars in the 1991 NHL Entry Draft. The talented defenseman went on to play for the Dallas Stars for 12 seasons, winning the Stanley Cup with the Stars in 1999. He is a Top-20 Dallas Stars defenseman, and ranks 8th in all-time games-played for the Stars.

The new Mavericks head coach finished out his NHL career with the New Jersey Devils in 2007, before beginning his professional coaching career with Allen Americans of the Central Hockey League as Defensive Coach and Assistant General Manager, winning two back-to-back CHL Championships in 2012 and 2013.

"Today is a very important day for the Missouri Mavericks, the start of the new era of Kansas City hockey," said Brent Thiessen, Mavericks President and General Manager, "We're very proud to be here in Independence, and very proud of what we have accomplished, now it's time to write the next chapter."
