Winston-Salem Dash News Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem starter Mike Recchia tied a career-high with seven innings pitched and established a new career best with nine strikeouts, but it was not enough as the Dash fell 2-0 to the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark Saturday night.

Recchia (1-2) retired the first nine batters he faced, six via punch-out. In the top of the fourth inning, though, Salem broke through for a run. Matty Johnson singled, and Jonathan Roof followed with a base hit. A fly out to deep center field allowed Johnson to advance to third base. With one out, David Chester's sacrifice fly to left fielder Courtney Hawkins plated Johnson for a 1-0 Red Sox lead.

Winston-Salem threatened against Salem starter Justin Haley (1-0) in the sixth inning. Adam Heisler led off the frame with a bunt single. Tim Anderson was hit by a pitch, giving the Dash two baserunners with no outs. But Jacob May's failed sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a strikeout. Hawkins and first baseman Keon Barnum also struck out against Haley to end the inning.

The score remained 1-0 until the top of the ninth. Dash reliever Kyle Hansen issued a one-out walk to Roof. A pickoff attempt by Hansen resulted in an errant throw, bouncing into the Winston-Salem bullpen as Roof scooted to third base. After catcher Carson Blair struck out, Chester delivered his second RBI of the game, a single up the middle that glanced off of second baseman Joey DeMichele's glove for a 2-0 Salem lead.

The Dash put up a fight in the bottom of the ninth inning. Salem reliever Kyle Stroup walked Hawkins and Barnum to begin the frame, then Jason Coats loaded the bases with a bunt single down the third-base line. Stroup then struck out DeMichele, induced a fielder's choice groundout from Michael Marjama that forced Hawkins at the plate, and got Nick Basto to fly out to left field, ending the game.

Winston-Salem has now lost six straight games, which is the second-longest skid of the Dash era (2009-present). The Dash have dropped five consecutive home games, which matches the longest such struggle in BB&T Ballpark history.

The Dash will look to bounce back against Salem on Easter Sunday. Right-hander J.B. Wendelken (1-1, 2.60 ERA) is expected to start on the mound for Winston-Salem, while Salem will pitch righty William Cuevas (1-1, 2.45 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for a special start time of 5 p.m. There will be special Easter Sunday activities and deals at BB&T Ballpark.
