The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes are off to a fast start on the field as they swept an Opening Weekend homestand versus the Hillsboro Hops. The team is also off to a fast start at the gate as over 10,000 fans flocked to Volcanoes Stadium for the three-game opening series. The best may be yet to come, attendance wise, for the Volcanoes as there are a series of special appearances and events slated for the summer at the Stadium that are certain to make the turnstiles spin!
July 4th, the Stadium will host the first-ever State of Oregon Nike Futures Game featuring the best baseball prospects in the State! The showcase event will feature a twi-night double header with two seven inning games at 4:00pm and 7:15pm. In between games will feature a home run derby and speed competition. The Stadium's annual 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular will follow the nightcap. Major League Baseball Scouts, from all 30 MLB teams have been invited to the event along with coaches from numerous Colleges. Future team coaches will include: Former New York Yankees great, Scott Brosius. Bert Hunter, former Volcanoes' coach and manager in the San Francisco Giants system, Tony Torcato, former #1 draft pick of the Giants who starred for the Volcanoes in 1998 and went on to play in the big leagues. Plus State of Oregon Hall of Famers Jack Dunn and Roy Love, will also be assisting.
On Thursday, July 11th, New York Yankees great Don Larsenwill appear at the Stadium. Larsen is the ONLY pitcher in baseball history to throw a perfect game in the World Series. The legendary pitcher will meet and greet fans and sign free autographs. Larsen's teammates included Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford. Later in his career Larsen pitched for the San Francisco Giants and played with Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Orlando Cepeda and Juan Marichal.
Saturday, July 13th, the San Francisco Giants 2012 World Series Trophywill appear at Volcanoes Stadium! Officially named the Commissioner's Trophy, it is the most coveted award in all of sports. Fans will be able to see the trophy and have photographs taken - a very rare and memorable opportunity to be part of the Giants' World Series Championship. In addition, former big leaguer Tony Torcato, the #1 draft pick of the Giants who starred for the Volcanoes in 1998, will meet and greet fans and sign free autographs.
Saturday, July 27th, will be Survivor Night. Benjamin 'Coach' Wade, three-time Survivor contestant on the CBS hit reality series will appear at Volcanoes Stadium. 'Coach' aka "The Dragon Slayer", appeared on Survivor Tocantins, Survivor Heroes vs. Villains and Survivor South Pacific and is one of the most popular players ever to appear on the show. He will meet and greet fans, sign autographs and pose for photographs before and during the Volcanoes game
Thursday, August 8th, we will welcome Baseball Legend Tommy Johnto Volcanoes Stadium. John is one of the greatest left-handed pitchers in baseball history. The 4-time All-Star debuted in 1963, and went on to play for 26 years in the majors. In 1974, facing a career-ending injury, Tommy underwent revolutionary surgery on his pitching arm what is now commonly referred to as "Tommy John Surgery". He made a great recovery, and pitched for another 15 years until retiring in 1989. In 1976, he did so well, he was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year.
